A procedure to reduce size and shape of the male breast.
Fullness in a male breast can cause embarrassment and create limit in a male's lifestyle, for example, limited involvement in sporting activities and outdoor social activities.
Surgical correction of this condition is not new.
The basic procedure involves reduction of the breast tissue by excision and / or fat removal. The scar can usually be hidden along the border of the nipple, with the results of surgery being very successful.
What happens?
The surgical procedure can be performed under twilight sedation
or general anesthetic as a day case. The surgeon can correct
the size of the male breast by making a small incision along
the border of the nipple and removing excess tissue and/or fat.
Is there any discomfort?
There is minimal discomfort at first. Light pain relievers and
sedatives can always be prescribed.
How long does it take?
The operation itself takes approximately one hour. You would stay
at the centre for a few hours post operatively.
When does the breast look normal?
Dressings and stitches are removed seven to ten days after the
operation at the clinic. Scars usually heal over six to eight
weeks and continue to fade and improve with time. The scars are
kept as small as possible, and are usually hidden along the border
of the nipple and well concealed.
What are the risks?
Every surgical procedure involves some general risks that you should
know about, the main ones being haematoma formation, infection,
unfavourable scars or fluid accumulation.
Local risks in this type of surgery are essentially associated with loss of soft tissues and replacement with scar tissue, largely as a result of compromised blood circulation.
Partial or complete loss of nipple sensitivity may
occur. This loss may or may not be of significance.
